Plate Tectonics

Diagram of the Subduction Process
Subduction is the process in which one plate is pushed downwards beneath another plate into the underlying mantle when plates move towards each other.

Diagram of Separation of Plates
Separation of Plates is a hypothetical zone or stage in which two phases, such as the liquid and vapor phases of a substance, establish an equilibrium with each other.

Diagram of what occurs due to sliding of plates
Sliding of Plates occur when plates grinding past each other in opposite directions create faults called transform faults. Powerful earthquakes often strike along these boundaries. The san Andreas Fault is a transform plate boundary that separates the North American Plate from the Pacific Plate. This fault is what is responsible for the devastating earthquakes caused in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
